TexasTrack Updates

I know that there have been a lot of wondering about the lack of updates on the website. I've received quite a few emails and calls asking why there hasn't been an update. Of course, almost no one asked if I was all right, just when I'm going to post more results for them to access.

Last weekend I was in South American visiting my fiancé and her family. To be honest, I didn't miss working on the website much at all. It was kind of nice to be able to sleep past 4 am and have time with my fiancé, Mary Isabel. For 10 years now I've given up these things every fall and spring for athletes, coaches, and parents.

I'm pretty disillusioned with a lot of the track and field world right now. Even though I post hundreds of meets that can't be found anywhere else, most of the information comes from other sources than the meet directors. Of course, there are always LOTS of people who want me to publicize their meet, who want their camps and clinics promoted (again, for free) so they can make extra money or promote their program, or want to get their athlete's name and performance correct so the colleges will notice them. It has been several years since anyone has bothered to pay me a little for the clinics that make them money in the summer. Of course, I do it for free anyway, so what's the point, right? (Of course, it's not free -- the website costs me about $100 a month now plus dozens of hours every week. M-F does not pay for it and I rarely work on the website during work hours.)

Of course, heaven forbid that most would want to help me out a little, too. It really bothers me a lot when I hear that coaches, whom I've helped for years, have bought expensive equipment from somewhere else and often they even paid more. A lot of people do come to me when they need equipment, but most don't. Some buy direct form my company thinking I'll get the credit, but that's not the case.

I remember a coach a few years ago telling me how he bought tens of thousands of dollars of equipment form someone else because they gave him a set of warmups and some shoes. He'd used my site daily as a resource and also to promote his events, but when it came time to purchase he went with the guy who threw in a few dollars in apparel for free. (Trust me -- NOTHING is free.) I hear that kind of stuff ALL the time.

I'll never forget when one of my closest friends told me a few years ago that there's no reason to help someone in need if your're not going to get anything out of it. We were talking about the difference between helping the people in Iraq and the people in Sudan , but the sentiment is something I hope I never accept in my life. Maybe that kind of reasoning is the way of the world these days.

For those that have given me the chance to earn their business, I can't tell you how much I appreciate it. I have thousands of friends in the sport who will always remain dear to me for the rest of my life whether they help me or not. I pray that I will always be a good friend to them. This has been a very difficult spring with Mary's impending move to the U.S. and her medical problems in Peru which has put her in the hospital a couple of times this spring. For my friends who have been supportive, I can never thank you enough.

I know I'll probably get plenty of emails telling me I'm whining again to get off my rear and start getting those results up again so they can see what's going on with district meets starting next week. I realize that to most, getting to see results is far more important than the person who is doing the work for you.

To those who think differently, thank you. You're the ones who know that being a good human being is the most important thing.

1 - I just wanted to let you know I stumbled on your site last year and have enjoyed it very much. I am a Texas girl who ran and coached track many moons ago. My child is active in high school track although we now live out of state. It has been wonderful to read about our many family and Texas friends' children and see what is going on in the track world in Texas. I do appreciate all the hard work you do and hoped that when there were not any postings that you were visiting your fiancee' and that you were okay. I even googled your name hoping that I wouldn't find out about an accident.
I know my opinion doesn't really matter, but with no break and no help, it is no wonder that you feel the way that you do when you have been volunteering your time for so long. So here is my advice: Enjoy your fiancee' and your future life together and try to stop worrying about not putting the postings up! Most of us checked the website and then went on to other things. My world didn't stop because they weren't there. Sure, I really enjoy it, but you do have a life!! The complainers will always complain about something and whether you are in the corporate world or track world, loyality is hard to come by these days. I'm looking forward to reading about the meets results again, but if there is never another posting - Oh well. Be happy and be safe. I don't mind you sharing my thoughts, but please don't post my email address or name. After teaching and coaching, I know how mean-spirited people can be. (Comment this)

2 - I am a fan of your website. I have used it to follow the performances of several track and cross country athletes over the past four years. I have missed seeing results this past week. I hope something good happens for you, and that there is some reward that comes your way. I hope your fiancee's health improves, and I wish the two of you many blessings in the future. If you never post another meet, well, thanks for all the hard work. You made me happy many times. (Comment this)

3 - Larry, I don't blame you one bit for having the feelings you have the time you have spent running this website in relation to your job. I emailed you twice already with the first time asking if you were okay and then I emailed you yesterday stating my opinion on how it upsets me that coaches and meet directors cannot get their act together. I signed it "huge TexasTrack.com fan. I also called you yesterday to see what was up with the updates and you responded by telling me your desolusion and I replied that I didn't blame you one bit. I am a huge fan of Texas high school sports and I am myself shell out a lot of money year round to support our Texas athletes with no benefit to myself and this year has been the worst year of feeling any kind of appreciation for what I do out of the goodness of my heart. I think you should drop doing your website only because now coaches and meet directors will feel the impact and importance your website was and the hard work it took to maintain it. You've done a great job for many years and you were only appreciated by a very few, especially the athletes themselves. If the coaches and meet directors really cared they would have been more responsible with getting the information to you. You have nothing to feel guilty about. This will be my last year being a fan as the appreciation is no longer there. You will be greatly missed by this huge fan. (Comment this)

4 - I appreciate your website. I was wondering why there hasn't been any updates in the last two weeks. I just assumed you were probably busy, so I paid it no mind. Then I read your blog and I realize that you have been off having a personal life?????????? Come on man! It is track season.... I'm assuming you have another job that pays money and takes up most of your time. If so, than this website and track & field is your hobby and you probably shouldn't complain about the fact that you aren't getting paid enough to do your hobby. If this isn't your hobby, but your profession, then you SHOULD be getting paid plenty, because you are darn good at it.....

Thanks for your website. This message was meant to be a compliment.

Chuck

5 - Phil, as an athlete I greatly admire and respect the wonderful work you do and it's as a result of your work that I am informed as to what other rival teams around me are involved with. You deserve a break and I greatly respect your decision to take a breather. keep up the good work and God bless. (Comment this)

6 - Phil:

I definitely missed the results, but I just figured that you were busy. I'm glad you took the time to visit the future in-laws. Life is way too short to not enjoy. I'm hoping that you'll continue the site, but you need to do what's best for you.

As far as the other poster said about this being a frustrating season, I'm with you 100%. I'm a volunteer coach (and a CPA working 70+ hours per week right now). Imagine my shock when the school I help out at refused to provide a busdriver to get the track team to their meet. The kids work hard for the enjoyment of the meet, and the school lets them down. Unfortunately, I'm not certified to drive a bus. You can bet that the school would ensure that a bus was available for the football team.

I'll keep coaching because I love the sport and want to pass on that love/enjoyment to future generations. (Comment this)

7 - I check out the website weekly as do many others. I would pay for the data.

I heard a story once that Michael Dell had a paper route when he was a kid. For a month he gave away papers so people would get hooked realize how much they liked the morning paper. Then he went to each of them and sold them a paper.

Same principle here. You have thousands hooked on the website. Charge a subscription fee! I would easily pay $5.00 a month or more for access.

Quit whining and do something about it. I love knowing who my daughters competition is and where she ranks amongst the top runners in the state. I love to know who the best runners are when she goes to a meet. I enjoy telling her how her friends are doing when she is not running with them. (Comment this)

8 - Just wanted to say thanks 4 the results u always post up. U deserve a longer break man. Results will always be there, just take a day off or 2, and enjoy it. Yes i do have to confess, that i depend on ur results u place on TX Track.com, but then i realized, this is ur time u put in it. Your work, and u have to put so much in it. Whatever u do, i wish u the best of luck. P.S. I'm a Freshman runner, and ur results have helped me a lot for track and XC. Thanks :)) (Comment this)

9 - I just want to let you know that it really means a lot to the athletes to see the results you post. I appreciate the hard work you have put in and the commitment you have made to the sport. It's really frustrating when meet directors do not care enough to send results in. If they can't get the FULL results in, then why even have the meet in the first place? As a distance runner, I appreciate any recognition that I or any other athlete who lives and breathes track can get. EVERY athlete deserves to be recognized for their hard work and commitment to one of the most pure sports out there, and it truly means a lot. Thank you for your effort and commitment. I wish meet directors would step it up, because after all, it should be about the athletes and the feats that they accomplish, not about money and convinence. (Comment this)

10 - Phil,
My daughter ran at St. Agnes Academy in Houston and on scholarship at Texas State. Whenever I needed anything track & field I bought it from MF and always made sure it went through you. I can tell you that in preparing information for college coaches regarding my daughter's recruiting process Texastrack was invaluable. Your tireless efforts during her high school carreer from 1998 thru 2002 were invaluable for us in assisting is securing her a scholarship. I can certainly understand your frustration with coaches in not supporting you financially and by updating information on meets. If you decide to abandon the web site, it will be missed. However, family always comes first. Do not pay any attention to the whiners. Those who would whine obviously have no family life. Best wishes to you and your family. (Comment this)
